Almost all the Christmas shows airing in December involve snow. Here in our reading though, we’re led into the desert wilderness. That’s where John the Baptist is announcing the arrival of the Messiah and calling people to repentance. Not very ‘Christmassy’ I’ll grant you but definitely worth a look!
- What comes to mind when you hear the word, “repentance”? Think back to a time when you were truly repentant? What was that like for you? What did you learn about repentance (and yourself) through it all?
- What connections can you make between the approach of the Messiah and the need for a change of heart or of direction? What’s wrong with not changing anything?
- Do you think there’s any significance to John appearing in the wilderness? What else happens in the wilderness? In what ways does this shed light on the meaning of this reading?
Next Step: John mentions the “fruit” of repentance without ever saying what it is. What do you think he’s talking about? What might your repentance look like during Advent this year?
