On this first Sunday in Lent, we find solace in knowing Jesus himself was tempted as we are tempted. This week’s reading from the Gospel of Matthew focuses on the temptation of Jesus after fasting for forty days and nights in the wilderness.

  • When have you been tempted at an extreme moment of vulnerability? Were you able to overcome the temptation? Why or why not?

  • In this passage, Matthew shares with us readers that Jesus was able to overcome the tempter by quoting God’s Word. How has God’s Word helped you overcome temptations in the past? What are some of the Bible passages you refer to in times of need?

  • At first glance, the temptations which Jesus faced look like mere personal enticements. On a deeper level, Jesus is confronting the corrupt, oppressive systems of the first century by showing God’s kingdom will overcome. How is this good news for people today?

Next Steps: Jesus overcoming the temptations in the wilderness offers a personal comfort and hope for all believers. In the overcoming, Jesus also places a call for believers to be people of justice who confront the powers and systems which control, oppress, and marginalize vulnerable others. Take time this week to think about how God is inviting you to (1) help usher in the kingdom using God’s strength and (2) what it looks like for you to be a person of justice who helps people in their most vulnerable moments.
