On this third Sunday of Easter, we celebrate how—even amid confusion, uncertainty and sadness after loss—we have assurance that the resurrected Jesus walks beside us every step of the way. This week’s reading from the Gospel of Luke focuses on how two disciples breaking bread with Jesus allowed to see how Jesus was walking with them all along, even when they were confused and saddened by his death.

  • What do you think the disciples meant when they told a spiritually disguised Jesus they thought he was a “prophet mighty in deed and word before God” and the one to redeem Israel?

  • The men were astounded/deeply confused by the women’s testimony and good news of a resurrected Jesus, even after seeing the empty tomb for themselves. What do you think fueled their disbelief of the women’s testimony and good news of a resurrected Jesus?

  • Why is it significant that the disciples had a revelation of Jesus’ identity when they broke bread together? What does this mean for faith communities today?

  • When was the last time you realized that—in retrospect—Jesus was walking with you during a season of confusion and sadness? How did Jesus manifest his presence in your life?

Next Steps: Take time this week to discern if you are still confused or saddened by losses in your life. If so, reach out to a few trusted family members and/or friends this week, break bread with them, and share with them how you are feeling while being open to God using your friends to speak life, comfort, truth, and clarity into your confusion and sadness. If not, discern if there are any family members or friends who may be having a difficult time this Easter, reach out to them, and make yourself available to break bread with them and to be used by God to comfort them in their time of need.
