Today we’re looking at the first two—in a series of three—parables about lost things. If you’ve ever lost your car keys or reading glasses, you know how anxiety provoking that is and how intense the search can become. This intensity becomes so great in these parables, it borders on seeming a bit too much. What’s the message behind such intense seeking? That’s what we’ll find out today.

  • What’s the most important object you’ve ever lost? What was it? Why was it so important to you? Did you ever find it? What were the consequences of finding or not finding what you sought?
  • The people in the parables eagerly set aside what they have (99 sheep, 9 coins) to track down the one they don’t have. Does that seem reasonable to you? Why or why not?
  • Both parables end with a description of the joy that results in heaven when a single sinner repents. How does recovering lost things relate to repentance?

Next Step: What does the woman do with the coin she finds? She spends it! It gets used for what it’s made for. So, what happens when God finds you?
