On this Reformation Sunday, we turn our attention to our identity in Christ and our work for the enlarging of his church. This is what stewardship is about. A common misconception about stewardship is that it is primarily about giving money to support ministry. This may very well be the end effect of stewardship, but it begins with what we have received. What that is and why it matters are our topics for today.

  • In what ways have you experienced God’s generosity (outside of salvation, spouses and children—of course!)? In what ways has being the recipient of this generosity affected, formed or increased your faith?

  • Beginning in Genesis 1 and continuing through 2 Corinthians, Colossians and James, the Bible says we’re made in God’s image. What does bearing God’s image mean to you? What about you is most Godlike? What about you is least like God?

  • Most people, at one time or another, stress about finances. This affects more than our peace-of-mind but can deform our perspective—how we see things and what we count as most important. Giving can reframe and reorient our perspective. In what ways has the exercise of generosity helped you see things in a new way?

Next step: Like all parents, God wants to see himself reflected in you. What about you best reflects an aspect of God’s character? What in your life would you like to be more reflective of God’s life?
