On this fifth Sunday in Lent, we remember how God’s timing is not always aligned with our timing. This week’s reading from the Gospel of John focuses on Jesus bringing Lazarus back to life, well after anyone expected Jesus to intervene.
- When have you been disappointed by what seemed like God’s timing was not aligned with your timing?
- What are some areas in your life that feel “dead” that could be brought back to life by God? What would that look like?
- John shares that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days when Jesus arrived at Bethany. Why is this significant?
- In verses 32-35, John shares that Jesus “greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved” and “began to weep” after seeing Mary and the Jew weep. What does Jesus’ actions mean to you?
- Verses 25-26 are one of the famous “I am…” statements that often studied with people who are curious about Jesus. As a follower of Jesus, what does it mean for you that Jesus is the resurrection and the life? What does it look like to embody this truth with people in your life?
Next Steps: Take some time this week listen to “You Came (Lazarus)” by Bethel Music and reflect on the lyrics. What words or phrases stick out to you? Now think about how you can be this source of hope and faith in the lives of your family members and friends. Identify a family member or friend who could benefit from God’s resurrection power and one tangible act you can do this week to help inspire hope and faith amid their struggle.
