Today we mark the anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. For Luther, the Reformation was merely the process of freeing the gospel from the captivity of the medieval church. Today we have a look at both the gospel and what it frees us from. Let’s get to it!

  • Jesus says to his disciples: The truth will make you free. What does the word ‘truth’ mean for you? How do you discern what is true? How does your concept of truth function in your everyday life?

  • What do you notice in this reading that seems strangely ignorant of both the Jew’s ancient and current history? In what ways does this give us clues as to how the truth makes us free?

  • Think about the difference/s between freedom from something and freedom for something? Which kind of freedom is Jesus offering? What does having this kind of freedom equip to do as Jesus’ disciples?

Next Step: For what has Jesus set you free? Many Christians think that faith is something passive and internal. While it’s true that faith is something we receive as a gift, like all other gifts it’s meant to be ‘unwrapped’ and used. So, how are you using this gift? How is God using you to exercise this gift of faith?
