Luke is drawing near to the end of his Travel Narrative (chapters 9-19) that describes Jesus’ intentional journey to Jerusalem and the cross. This story is unique in that it takes place in the borderlands between Samaria and Galilee—not exactly in Samaritan or Jewish territory. Who Jesus meets there and the outcome of this meeting are as interesting as they are mysterious. Let’s have a look.
- Have you ever felt “betwixt and between”? This feeling could be geographical, as it is in the text, or emotional—even spiritual. What were the circumstances of your experience? How did it resolve? What, if anything, did you learn?
- That the only leper who returns to Jesus with thanks is a Samaritan is another example of the “inversion” common to Luke’s stories. What do you think the point is behind Jesus finding faith in foreigners?
- How would you define gratitude: A reaction to individual gratitude-worthy experiences or an orientation through which to view all experiences? What are the implications of your answer?
Next step: For what or for whom are you grateful today?
