Believe it or not, fully two-thirds of Luke’s Gospel is devoted to Jesus’ mission to die on the cross for the sins of the world. Our reading today captures this transition from the first third of the gospel to what follows. As he starts his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus has a not-too-friendly pass through Samaria and three quick (but telling) conversations with people he meets on the way. It’s an interesting travelogue. Let’s dig in!

  • What’s the most interesting trip you’ve ever taken? Was it a vacation? Was it for business? Whom did you meet? What was most memorable about it?

  • The narrative is interrupted somewhat by James and John wanting to call down fire from heaven on the Samaritans. Why do they seek to kill the Samaritans? What does Jesus mean by refusing to sanction their plan?

  • There’s a pronounced urgency to this part of Luke. What does Luke want us to understand by this urgency?

Next Step: What really encourages and propels your faith? What about your life with God creates urgency and excitement? Wherever you find these things, ask yourself what God is communicating to you and be ready to share your answers with those still searching for God.
