On this first Sunday after Epiphany, we are reminded of the significance of the waters of baptism. This week’s reading from the Gospel of Matthew focuses on Jesus’ baptism and how—in these very waters—all who are baptized like Jesus are named and claimed by God.   

  • When have you felt like life or the world has been against you? How did God show up in that situation/circumstance? 

  • In this passage, Matthew shares with us readers that John was hesitant to baptize Jesus but does not fully explain John’s reasons. Why do you think John resisted?  

  • How do you think Jesus felt after God claimed Jesus as his son and called him beloved?  

  • Jesus’ baptism shows us how those who are baptized in name of Jesus are named and claimed by God. What moments in your life have you felt like you were named and claimed by God? How did it make you feel?
