As we’ve seen in previous weeks, a sense of urgency is building in Luke as Jesus gets nearer to the cross. As this happens, his teaching gets a sense of urgency as well. It’s pithy and to the point: Treasure the things of God and prepare for him to show up! His point? What we treasure is revealed in what we put first and what we put first makes us either ready or resistant to respond to God’s promptings. Let’s jump right in.

  • What do you always make room for in your life? What often gets shunted off to the side when you get busy or overwhelmed?
  • What does the text suggest our priorities should be? In what ways are things important to God reflected in what’s important to you?
  • Look again at verse 34. How do you interpret this? Why do you suppose Jesus wants us to understand the relationship between heart and treasure?

Next Step: Audit your priorities. Which ones are most important? To the outside observer, what do your priorities reveal about what’s important to you? What might need to change to reflect the priorities Jesus identifies in today’s reading?
